How to create a Post on WordPress

On the left hand menu, choose “Posts.”

Press “Add New.”

Create a title (e.g. Ignite Retreat a Resounding Success)

Create content – description, images, links, other media as desired.

Categories

On the right-hand module labeled “Categories,” check the desired category. It’s usually helpful to check “Uncategorized” even if you check another category as well.

Choose “Add New Category” if your post does not fit into a pre-existing category.

These allow WordPress to know which posts to group together (for example which to show on the home page newsfeed, or which to show on the Ignite page).

Featured Images

On the right-hand module labeled “Featured Image,” click “Set featured image.”

Choose from the Media Library or upload a new image.

With Featured Images it is important to do formatting before uploading to WordPress. It’s a good idea to play around with your image in Microsoft Paint and vary the dimensions until you find a size that fits nicely.

For example, if you are using a clip-art image with square dimensions, you’ll probably want to create a Paint jpg file in which your square image has empty space on either side (extra large side margins) that make the new image a rectangular shape to better fit the featured image box (which is w=628, h=250).

TIP—IN ‘PAINT’ YOU CAN SELECT YOUR IMAGE (PRESS CTRL+A), RIGHT-CLICK WITHIN THE SELECTION, AND CLICK “RESIZE” IN ORDER TO GIVE A SPECIFIC PIXEL SIZE OR SPECIFIC PERCENTAGE DIMENSIONS.

NOTE: You can always click on “Preview” in the right-hand “Publish” module to preview your post in a new tab. As you load different featured images (or different main area content), keep refreshing the preview page to see what your changes look like.
